News Release Say Goodbye to Kidney Stones July 23, 2010 Highlands Medical Center Offers Area's ONLY Full-time Lithotripsy Service
A non-invasive way of breaking up kidney stones
How it works...
Highlands Medical Center recently purchased a new state-of-the art Dornier Compact Sigma, a modular lithotripsy machine that uses shock-wave technology to effectively break up kidney stones without the need for invasive surgery. Here's a look at some of the features and benefits of the Sigma lithotripter.
The Sigma's GE9900 C-arm provides exceptional imaging capabilities, allowing Highlands' urologists to easily view-and treat-stones without the need to first inject dye into the ureter or kidney.
The multifunctional Relax+ patient table is made from lightweight but durable carbon fiber and can support up to 410 pounds.
While the Sigma's primary function is lithotripsy, its modules can be reconfigured for other types of urological and orthopedic procedures.
A major safety feature of the Sigma is that patients are never treated in the prone (face or belly-down) position, as that can restrict their airflow. Instead, the therapy head position is adjusted, depending on the type and location of the stone, so patients will always remain on their backs.
The lithotripter is operated by urologists Dr. Britt and Dr. Simmons. Highlands Surgery Center and Imaging Center staff assist with procedures.
